The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a government initiative to increase the share of solar rooftop capacity and empower residential households to generate their own electricity. The scheme offers subsidies to households for installing rooftop solar systems.
The scheme provides a subsidy of 60% of the solar unit cost for systems up to 2kW capacity and 40% for systems between 2 to 3kW capacity, with a cap of 3kW. This results in a subsidy of up to Rs 78,000, depending on the system size.
For a 1kW system, the subsidy is Rs 30,000; for a 2kW system, it is Rs 60,000; and for a 3kW system, it is Rs 78,000 or more, based on current benchmark prices.
To apply, register on the National Portal by selecting your state and electricity distribution company. The portal will assist you with system size recommendations, benefits calculators, vendor ratings, and allow you to choose your preferred vendor and solar unit make.
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is planned to be implemented until FY 2026-27.
The National Programme Implementation Agency (NPIA) will implement the scheme at the national level, with State Implementation Agencies (SIAs) overseeing the process at the state/UT level, including the management of facilitative measures like net meters and vendor registration.
DISCOMs (Distribution Utilities) will ensure the availability of net meters, timely inspection and commissioning of installations, vendor registration, and interdepartmental coordination for solarizing government buildings.
